Former Yoshihara Residence

Attractions

This is the residence of the Yoshihara family, who served the former Yanagawa Clan of Kobochō as a separate headman for generations during the Edo period (about 200 years ago) and later also served as the headman of the domain. The house was used by the feudal lord of the Yanagawa Domain for hunting and official use, and while it is significant in scale, the craftsmanship of Ōkawa, a town known for its woodworking, can be seen in the details such as the pillars and transoms. Tours are free, and visitors can also try their hand at kumiko woodwork (1,500 yen) and matcha green tea (500 yen). Handmade workshops and art events are also held. Please allow plenty of time to enjoy them.

Value as a Cultural Asset

The main onarimon gate was constructed in 1825 and designated a National Important Cultural Property. The residence also has three storehouses designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by the city of Ōkawa and a service gate and brick walls designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by the national government. The building is characterized by its complex roof structure, massive exterior with large walls, and a floor plan that clearly separates the lines of flow between the reception area and the inward-facing area from the entrance to the upper room. It is also highly regarded as a fine example of a large private estate of the late Edo period, with its bold construction around the earthen floor using large pieces of camphor wood and stylish designs around the tatami room of excellent artistry.
