The main building is the tallest townhouse on the street in Kobochō, with a height of approximately 9 meters. The separate tatami room is set out in a mansion structure with a wing gate and a ceremonial porch. This is a branch of the Yoshihara family (house designated as an Important Cultural Property) , which served the former Yanagawa Clan of Kobochō for many generations as a separate head of the town. It used to be a sake brewery called "Sakaba" (trade name) by residents. Enjoy viewing the imposing exterior. Guided tours (depending on the schedule) are available to see inside and enjoy the excellent architectural techniques of the Edo period, including the attic of the main building, which is made of 200-year-old logs. The building is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
This building is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property. It is thought to have been built in the first half of the 19th century, based on an inscription dated 1838 on the kaerumata carvings of the ceremonial entrance and an inscription dated 1806 on a wooden board owned by the family, as well as similar carvings on the kaerumata to those of the former Yoshihara family residence. The roof of the main building is made of logs. The structure of the attic of the main house, which is a hipped roof made of logs, is a testament to the excellence of Edo-period architectural techniques. The present house was restored to its original condition in 1994 after the roof tiles were damaged by a typhoon in 1991 and completely replaced. From the viewpoint of preserving the townscape, the house was restored almost to its original state.
