Ganrenji Temple

Ganrenji Temple is said to have been founded in 1536 by Enokizu Kumeinosuke, the man the region is named after. The temple is of the Ōtani branch of the Jōdo Shinshū sect. Passing through the main gate on the temple approach, you can see the temple grounds, including the main hall, bell tower, and storehouse, all in the traditional style. A bronze statue of Enokizu Kumeinosuke himself also stands in front of the main hall. Guided tours are available for those who wish to enter the temple and receive detailed explanations (depending on the schedule).

Value as a Cultural Property.

According to an old document owned by the temple, the temple was built around 1536 by Kumeinosuke Enotsu, a vassal of Ashikaga Yoshiharu, the 12th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate and the founder of the Okawa woodworking school. According to the temple’s records, it was estimated to be rebuilt in 1753 and renovated during the Meiji period (1868–1912). The bell tower was rebuilt in 1913.
