Hōsenji Temple

Attractions

Founded in the early Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1592), a time of great historical significance, the temple was later moved to its current location in 1665 during the Edo period under the auspices of the lord of the Yanagawa Clan. The temple is of the Jōdo sect, and its precincts retain the bell tower gate of the temple gate, built in 1824, and the main hall and storehouse, built in the hōgata-style. From the outside, visitors can view the multi-story bell tower gate. Guided tours are available inside to view the magnificent blue dragon decorations of the main hall and the doors decorated with Ōkawa kumiko wooden latticework (depending on the schedule).

Building Description

The bell tower gate and the main hall and storeroom built in the hōgata-style remain from their construction in 1824. The main hall and the gate deteriorated and were severely damaged by a typhoon in 1991, so the roof was completely re-thatched and partially restored in 1993.
