Kobo Hachiman Shrine, a testament to the rich history of Ōkawa City, is believed to have been constructed in the 10th century. The town of Kobo, which flourished around this shrine, is said to have evolved from a bustling market that once occupied the plaza to its front. The shrine's precincts are home to a diverse array of shrines, including Tenmangū Shrine, Gion Shrine, Miyajitake Shrine, Awashima Shrine, and Suitengū Shrine. Notable features include the Sakuramon Gate, the shinden altar, and the haiden hall of worship. Be sure to spot the colossal stone, believed to be a remnant of a Yayoi period tombstone, and the petite torii gate, reputed to bestow good health and a blissful marriage upon those who can pass through it.
Approaching the shrine, you'll first encounter a stone torii gate. Crossing a stone bridge and passing under the Sakuramon Gate, you'll be greeted by the haiden hall of worship and the main shrine, flanked by the Miyajitake Shrine on the left and the Suitengū Shrine on the right. The Tenmangū Shrine stands on the right side of the temple, with the Gion Shrine on the left. All these structures are steeped in tradition and showcase unique architectural styles. The honden main hall, adorned with degumi and koshigumi structures on the pillars, is a sight to behold. A building tag dating back to 1801 has been discovered on site, adding to the shrine's historical allure.
