This building, a designated Tangible Cultural Property by Fukuoka Prefecture, has a rich history intertwined with significant events and figures. According to Ogata family legend, after the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, a turning point in Japanese history, the Ogata family allied with the former Yanagawa Clan, a prominent force of the time. They began medical practices and settled in Kobo. The front of the house, with its imposing entrance and brick roof, reflects the family's samurai status. This rare and important building, nestled among townhouses, will be opened to the general public in 2026.
This building, recognized as a Tangible Cultural Property by Fukuoka Prefecture, boasts unique architectural features. The kaerumata, a decorative support on the beam, is of the same style as the former Yoshihara Family Residence, indicating its construction in the 19th century. The kaerumata is a significant element in traditional Japanese architecture, often used in important buildings. The building is characterized by a planar structure that successfully links the three functions of the house: the reception space of a samurai house, the preparation room in a doctor's house, and the living space. It is valuable as an important architectural structure that contributes to the traditional townscape of Kobo, as an existing samurai residence in the town area outside of Yanagawa Castle.
