Shōbun Vinegar & Takahashi Residence

Attractions

With a history of about 300 years, the vinegar made here is produced by the traditional method handed down only to successors. It has a mild flavour and has fans all over Japan. At the restaurant called Su Ristorante SHOUBUN, which has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ōkawa City, you can enjoy the chef's special lunch course (2,750 yen), which uses the vinegar in a 250-year-old townhouse-style building. The restaurant is very popular, so be sure to make a reservation. You can also tour the vinegar cellar, where you can enjoy the mellow aroma of the vinegar. (Reservations)
The store on the first floor is open daily, excluding Obon and New Year's holidays, so be sure to stop by.
The vinegar drink series is top-rated among women as a beverage rather than a condiment! Find your favorite flavor, such as ginger, which is gentle on the throat; strawberry, which is popular with children; or yuzu citrus, which is delicious with carbonated water.

Value as a Cultural Asset

In the early Edo period, Takahashi Kiyoemon moved to Enokizu, and the second generation of the Takahashi family, Shirōbei, started a sake brewery. Later, the fourth generation, also called Kiyoemen, started a vinegar business, which was the beginning of Shōbun Vinegar. The head office building of Shōbun Vinegar was constructed around the middle of the 18th century (the building is almost 250 years old) and is the oldest existing house in the Enokizu area. The main building is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ōkawa City. The main building is an irimoya gable-roofed structure with a tile roof, and the hut structure of the workshop, which is in a separate building, makes extensive use of nuki (through-hole) construction. During the Vinegar Storehouse Festival in April, a part of the Takahashi Family Residence is open to the public. Tea ceremonies and other events are held there.
